BIKE TRAILERS

Bike trailers are much safer than the carrier seats that attach to the seat post of your bike. The trailer should attach low on the rear-wheel frame of your bike. A safety leash should secure the trailer in case the primary attachment mechanism fails. And the trailer really must have a five-point harness for its passenger. Trailers come with screens that protect your child from bugs and flying debris.

Additional features to look for include a flexible backing around the child’s head, so that it can be held straight with a helmet on. Otherwise, the child’s head is thrust forward due to the distance the helmet projects in the back. This is not safe; it compromises the child’s airway.

Interior pockets are great for holding treasured rocks and sippy cups. Look closely at the amount of storage available. Some trailers have more legroom, and others have more storage room on the exterior back. It is probably a toss-up where you want to have more space, but I’d usually go for more legroom for the kid.

Bike trailers have a long life. Whereas bouncy chairs are good for six months, exersaucers for four months, and most clothing for three months, you are likely to still be using your bike trailer when your “baby” enters junior high. Don’t worry; you won’t still be pulling your teenager! You’ll find that bike trailers are also great for hauling gear. We use ours on trips to the park all the time, to carry coolers, lawn chairs, and blankets.
